Oudtshoorn is home to the Klein Karoo Group (formerly known as Klein Karoo Agricultural Co-operative.) The latter is the largest farmer’s Co-op for the ostrich industry in the world. Piet Schoeman is an active member of this co-op.
The farm tour on the farm Buffelsdrift will present you with an informative experience and a unique opportunity to gain an interesting insight into the farming activities.
Laura will welcome you personally and take you on a unique tour to meet one of the world’s oldest living creatures; the ostrich. (Strutio Camelus). They are also referred to as camel birds, because of their ability to live without water, for up to two months.
You will be thoroughly informed about the unique qualities of ostrich products such as leather, feathers, eggs and the healthy, (almost fat-free) ostrich meat.
Guests will be able to see ongoing seasonal ostrich farming activities, such as feeding, flock movement, breeding, dosing, plucking and chick rearing.
Groups will be transported on an open “bakkie” (pick-up truck), which in itself, is real fun. You will see breeding and feeding camps, as well as the Bonsmara stud cattle and the lucerne- and wheat fields.
You will also get a glimpse of the beautiful unspoilt little Karoo vegetation, which consists of more than 3000 species i.e. plants, trees, shrubs and succulents.
After the tour, guests can enjoy a refreshing cup of coffee or tea in Laura and Piet’s home. Here you will also have the opportunity to browse through the quality ostrich products. The products are manufactured especially for Laura’s shop, with leather directly from their farm.
When Laura stated her ideal of giving all visitors a memorable experience to see an authentic ostrich farm in operation, she knew she did not want to give them a commercial show tour. Come and experience, in an hour and a half, something you will never forget.
